Pharm.D. Director Clinical Development
From December 2008, Edwin Spaans has joined Kinesis-Pharma as Director Clinical Development. In this role, Edwin is leading the Clinical Development Department consisting of Consultants, Trial Managers, Medical Writers, Data Analysts and Programmers.
In the past 2 years, Edwin was a Senior Clinical Pharmacologist with Actelion Pharmaceuticals Ltd., shaping early clinical development and translational science for one of the most successful biopharmaceutical companies based in the Basel area in Switzerland. Acting as an internal consultant, Edwin was involved in strategic decisions for the clinical development organization and the majority of its development projects.
Before moving to Switzerland, Edwin has worked at Organon (currently Shering-Plough) for 8 years. From 2004 – 2007 as Head of Clinical Pharmacology, leading a group of 13 people being responsible for Organon’s world-wide clinical pharmacology activities through all phases of development. Under his responsibility, biomarker evaluation and proof of mechanism/concept type of studies became key activities, while the more classical pharmacokinetic activities were maintained efficiently and with high quality.
From 2000 – 2004 Edwin was a Clinical Pharmacologist, representing early clinical expertise in numerous development teams in all phases of clinical development. From 1997 – 2000 Edwin held positions as Clinical Research Scientist/Project Manager with the Dutch Poisons Control Centre, a collaboration between the National Institute of Public Health and the University Medical Centre Utrecht, where he received intensive medical and clinical research training. In these positions, Edwin has led several joint clinical pharmacology teams in alliances with large pharma, he was involved in a wide range of indication areas, including orphan indications, and he was responsible for a large variety of early (translational) clinical studies and later phase clinical pharmacology studies. He was also responsible for the clinical pharmacology components of a number of regulatory submissions, including 3 NDA’s.
Edwin is a licensed Pharmacist (Pharm.D.) since 1997 (Utrecht University) and holds a registration as a Clinical Pharmacologist since 2003. Before moving to Switzerland, he was an invited lecturer clinical pharmacology and drug development at Utrecht University in 2005 – 2006.
